This year at Melrose Upper we have implemented the Read 180 program. This program is designed to improve student reading through the use of adaptive instructional software, high-interest fiction and non-fiction books, and direct instruction in reading and writing skills. Currently, we have two classes working with this program, a fourth grade class which meets from 10:30-12:00 Monday through Friday, and a fifth grade class which meets from 12:15-1:45 Monday through Friday. During this time, 20 minutes is used for whole-group instruction, and then students rotate into 3 stations of 20 minutes each: small-group instruction. independent reading, and instructional software. The whole group meets again for a 10 minute wrap up session.
